Two-thirds of the southern part of the island, including our capital, Plymouth, was devastated and much of it remains buried beneath thick layers of ash and mud. More than half of our population has since migrated to North America and the UK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) monitors all activity of Soufri\u00e8re Hills and, together with the University of East Anglia and partners, champions the Mountain A Glow project. Alphonsus Cassell, better known as Arrow, hails from Wall Street just outside the island\u2019s capital, Plymouth and in 1983 released the international blockbuster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OkGgdIBX1to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hot! Hot! Hot!<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> It was chosen as the official anthem for the 1986 Football World Cup in Mexico and was the signature song played during the Notting Hill Carnival in 1988. The UK Government works with Montserrat\u2019s Government to strengthen the island\u2019s economic planning, emergency management, and security. In fact, the camaraderie is such that all who were born here have a nickname. Included among Montserratians \u2013 or \u201c\u2018Stratians\u201d (pronounced \u201cStrashans\u201d) as we call ourselves \u2013 are immigrants from Dominica, Jamaica, Guyana, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, who came to help rebuild the island after the first volcanic eruption. It is therefore not unusual to hear radio advertisements in Spanish and Haitian Creole. Access is allowed only to Plymouth to view the Buried City and must be with a certified tour guide. Visits are strictly monitored by a police escort and there is constant radio contact with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO). There is also a siren alarm system installed around the island which is used to warn of any volcanic activity that might affect the rest of the island. It bears semblance to the Irish stew and can be served with a variety of foods, such as bread, and rice. This dish can be difficult to cook because it has to be a particular taste, flavour and colour. The stew cannot be too thick or too thin. It has to be just right. It is usually cooked in a special pot\/tin on a wood fire, as the smoke from the wood enhances the taste of the stew. It is a communal dish usually served at weddings, christenings, parties and funerals.<\/p>\n<p>But on Fridays, this is the lunch staple! Government offices open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Banks open only on weekdays, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, except on Fridays, when they close at 3:00 pm. The only places that open past 7:00 pm are restaurants, pubs and night clubs.
